Los simplistas, dentro de la vanguardia francesa, más que un grupo de artistas, eran una hermandad. Como parte de sus búsquedas para conocer los límites de lo humano, compartían la fascinación por la metafísica y el gusto por sustancias venenosas, tóxicas y alucinógenas. Roger Gilbert-Lecomte fue uno de sus líderes y este libro reúne artículos y cartas en los que deja constancia de esos intereses individuales y grupales. El naufragio, la derrota, la herida, la vocación de fracaso, la nostalgia por el poder primitivo de la palabra, son los terrenos preferidos en la exploración estética de este autor. Desde ese lado aparentemente oscuro, buscaba la iluminación no sólo de las zonas de tiniebla sino de las esencias más intrínsecas del ser. El simplismo fue toda una filosofía y en estos textos de Gilbert-Lecomte se encuentran sus planteamientos fundamentales.
